Farewell 2018

Ziauddin College of speech language and hearing sciences organized the farewell party for batch 8 that graduated in 2018.

Students of all the batches gathered together as we all bid farewell to the outgoing class. The day was a fiesta devoted to the years spent together with friends and teachers to reminisce joyous moments. The auditorium of ZU was festooned with dazzling lights.

The ceremony started with the welcome of graduating students, khadijah Fatimah and Abdullah sufi , students of batch 6 and 8 respectively, presented the welcome note and were the hosts of the night.

It was a fun filled event with the incredible skit performance, mimicry, farewell dinner and lots of giveaways. ZCSLHS also set up the photo shoot session with a photo booth and props for all the students.

In the end, students of batch 8 shared all their memories with their audience and each one of them was given a title by their juniors. The title characterized their personalities, behaviors and their work and was the highlight of the evening.

The Learning tree (TLT) invited Miss Amina Siddiqui, Associate professor and principal of college of speech language and hearing sciences ziauddin university on 6th Aug 2018,as a speaker at The for Learning Tree and Samrahi Montesorri.

Miss Amina Siddiqui addressed the parents and teachers of the children At TLT she elaborated on “language development in the early years”she also explained about the importance of early language stimulation and the factors that influence language development which includes the roles of parents,teachers and other caregivers.All the attendees  remained thoroughly engaged throughout the lectur was a good learning experience for all present.

Facilitation of Language in Autism using a Floortime approach

Workshop Day 1

The College of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Ziauddin University, arranged a three day workshop on the topic, “Facilitation of Language in Autism using a Floortime approach”. The workshop commenced on the 16th of July and ended on the 18th of July 2018. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Mehnaz Maqbool, a Speech and Language Pathologist currently practicing in USA.

The first day of the workshop was on the 16th of July i.e. a Monday. It was held at the auditorium of the Rehabilitation Sciences campus, Ziauddin University. Students and faculty of the College of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences as well as alumni and other professionals were also in attendance. The workshop started at 10:00 a.m and ended at 1:00 p.m with a lunch break at 12:00 p.m. Ms. Mehnaz ‘s lecture included an explanation of the term “Floortime”, the steps of implementation and who to implement it. The audience and others remained thoroughly engaged throughout the lecture and interacted with the speaker by asking questions. It was a good learning experience for all present.

Workshop day 2 - Practical day 1

17th July 2018 was the second day of the educational workshop carried out by CCC-SLP Ms. Mehnaz Maqbool. It was a five hour workshop where the attendees observed a hands-on demonstration of using the floortime approach for facilitation of language.

It consisted of three individual therapy sessions, approximately one and a half hour each. Each one was followed by a Q&A session. The attendees were able to gain an in-depth insight into how one can use the floortime approach with children of different temperaments and individual personalities.

Workshop day 3 - practical day 2

18th July 2018 marked the last day of this instructional workshop. The day was divided into three sessions and the layout was the same as day one.

The attendees observed three different patients, witnessing instantaneous effectiveness of this approach in some cases. The attendees also learned the importance of having a multidisciplinary approach to therapy. The instructor often effectively combines SLP techniques with some techniques used by Occupational Therapists to aid the process of language acquisition and multi sensory stimulation.

The arrangement of Video conferencing made by IT department of ZU between the CSLHS college and clinic Campuses. This facilitated observation of the floor time therapy sessions conducted at the clinic campus by Mehnaz; in the college classrooms for all enrolled in the workshop.

COLLABORATION WITH READ

READ is a sole proprietorship, and conducts a diploma course for teaching children with learning difficulties and also provides remediation to children with learning difficulties on a one-to-one basis ZCSLHS is a non-profit institution, indulging in academic and clinical training of students, at the undergraduate level.

SCOPE

The Ziauddin College of Speech Language & Hearing Sciences, at Ziauddin University monitors and provides academic collaboration with READ, Karachi for their Diploma Course.

COLLABORATION WITH THE INDUS HOSPITAL

The CSLHS thereby aims to extend their realm of clinical services, through their final year students under supervision of the Speech Language Therapist at the TIH clinic to a larger number of children and adults presenting with communication, feeding, swallowing, and hearing impediments, of any degree in severity.

SCOPE

The TIH shall provide clinic space in their OPD for speech language therapy and facilitate the student ASLTs, to assess and treat In-patients admitted in their wards.

The patients seen by the final year student ASLTs of the CSLHS shall be from the realms of :

  • Child language disorders with or without cognitive impediments (specific language impairment, autism, mental retardation, auditory processing disorders, sensory processing disorders).
  • Adult language disorders of neurogenic origin  with or without cognitive impediments (aphasia, dementia, language disorders after TBI, or RHS).
  • Child and adult speech disorders (phonological disorders; misarticulation; dysfluency, dysphonias)
  • Child and adult motor speech disorders of neurogenic origin (dyspraxia, dysarthria)
  • Child and adult feeding and swallowing disorders (children with cerebral palsy, TBI, adults presenting with dysphagia post TBI, CVA)

The final year student ASLTs of the CSLHS are:

  • Seeing child and adult patients in the clinic rooms on OPD basis and In – patients within the wards of TIH.
  • Conducting screening and detailed assessments of child and adult patients presenting with all speech, language, feeding and swallowing disorders, as well as hearing impairment  as mentioned above
  • Conducting individualised and group therapy, of all speech, language, feeding and swallowing disorders, and hearing impairments  as mentioned above;
  • Counselling the care givers on transfer and carryover of therapy at home as well as provide verbal and written feedback of the patients’ condition on periodic basis.
  • Conducting parent training on a regular basis to facilitate the progress in therapy.
  • Working within a multidisciplinary team with other health care service personnel in TIH to ensure best results to all patients seen.

COLLABORATION WITH KINDER ACADEMY

KA is an Early Childhood Education, located at Clifton, Karachi. Early intervention at KA refers to a systematic program of evaluation and therapy that includes screening and complete assessment, and activities designed to address developmental delays or impairments in verbal communication that may be experienced by children within the first 5 years of life. By aligning KA with CSLHS- ZU, we aim to advance the clinical education, training, data collection and experienced speech language therapists and student clinicians through children seen at the KA who come from a wider spectrum of Pakistani society.

SCOPE

KA shall provide clinic space in their office for speech language assessment and therapy; and facilitate the Faculty and student clinicians to assess children.

The Speech language therapists and student clinicians shall:

 

  • Screen the children between 0 to 7 years.
  • Discuss the findings in assessment with the teacher of the child whenever need be.
  • Counsel the care givers on language stimulation at home.
  • Conduct parent training (for parents of children enrolled at KA) at the CSLHS as and when required by the KA management.
  • Work as a team with other therapists at KA to ensure best results.
  • Duly fill in all the relevant forms.
  • The KA shall be responsible for providing all material except assessment tools.
  • The children of KA may be referred for further assessment, to the CSLHS.

COLLABORATION WITH KDSP

KDSP is a non-profit organization registered under the section 42 of the Companies Ordnance Act 1984. KDSP envisions a world in which people with Down syndrome (DS) are accepted, included and are given the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations and become valued members of welcoming communities.

 

SCOPE

KDSP shall provide clinic space in their office for speech language therapy; and facilitate the interns and Faculty to assess children with DS.

The Speech therapist(s) at KDSP shall:

  • See children with DS between 0 to 7 years;
  • Once all the children between the above said age range are accommodated, KDSP’s Head of Speech therapy to review whether to increase the age to 7+;
  • Counsel the care givers on transfer and carryover of therapy at home as well as provide verbal

and written feedback of the progress on periodic basis;

  • Conduct parent training on a regular basis to facilitate the progress in therapy;
  • Work as a team with other therapist at KDSP to ensure best results;
  • Attend the weekly review meeting held at KDSP;
  • Duly fill in all the relevant form:
  • Child Case History Form,
  • Clinical Supervision,
  • Session Summary Form,: and
  • Facilitate KDSP operational team in execution of programs where and when input required.

Pre-Conference Workshop Write Up

Ziauddin University organized the annual international rehabilitation conference. The conference was followed by preworkshops and the plenary sessions.

Ziauddin College of hearing sciences invited two national and one international speaker for the preworkshops that held in the College of speech language and hearing sciences on 22nd Feb 2018.The facilitators who presented in the preworkshop sessions for CSLHS are Dr.Farooq Rathore on “Research made simple for Speech & Language Therapist”, Dr. Farah Asim on “Affective disorders in children with Autism and ADHD” and Mr. Braxton Dean Baker on “Introduction into Functional Communication Training (FCT) and Verbal Behavior”

Workshop by Dr. Farooq

Pre-conference workshops at the College of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences (CSLHS) kicked off on Thursday, 22 February 2018. The first workshop was titled ‘Research made simple for Speech & Language Therapist’ and was conducted by Dr. Farooq Rathore, Head of Department at the Rehabilitation Medicine department at PNS Shifa hospital.
In a technologically interactive session featuring online polls and slide sharing, Dr. Rathore encouraged students and faculty to indulge in and explore the realm of research. Highlighting the personal and social benefits of conducting research for rehabilitation professionals, stressed upon starting with small steps in the beginning.
Acknowledging the dearth of formal training in the field of research at the undergraduate level, Dr. Rathore introduced participants to the major concepts in research and equipped them with a comprehensive variety of online resources for providing assistance in a range of areas; choosing a research topic to a research mentor, and improving one’s written language skills to advice on the research journal one should opt for.
Adopting a lighthearted approach for addressing the serious ethical concerns regarding authorship and plagiarism, Dr. Rathore instantly connected with the students and their ground level concerns. Through his professionally and socio-culturally relevant examples, he managed to widen the knowledge base of the audience and reshape their attitudes and perspectives regarding research, within the 90-minute session.

Workshop by Dr. Farah

A workshop conducted by Dr.Farah Asim was held on 22nd February 2018, at the College of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences. Dr.Farah is a child psychiatrist from New Jersey who has specialized in ADHS, ASD and other behavioral difficulties. She presented on DSM-5, where she mainly focused on the revised diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. DSM is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and is the diagnostic bible for mental health professionals. DSM-5 is the newest version that was released in 2013.
The use and importance of stimulants, anti-psychotics and anti-depressants in the treatment of these behavioral disorders was stated, with both the pros and cons of administrating medication being discussed.
It was an interactive session with the key discussions being about the contrasting differences speech therapists find in the welfare and diagnostic processes in places like Pakistan, as compared to North America. A number of valid points about the importance of social services and public health services were bought up, societal issues and how to resolve them were also targeted.

Workshop by Braxton

A Pre-conference workshop was conducted on Friday, the 23rd of February 2018 at Ziauddin University titled “An Introduction into Functional Communication Training (FCT) and Verbal Behavior”. This workshop was arranged by the faculty of the College of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Ziauddin University for its students. The facilitator for this workshop was Mr. Braxton Dean Baker, a Speech and Language Pathologist from Kansas, Missouri. The moderator for this workshop was Ms. Asiya Sachwani, a faculty member at the College of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. The duration of the session was 3 hours. It commenced at 2:00 p.m, and ended at 5:00 p.m with a 15 minute tea break in between. The workshop encompassed the strategies used for facilitation of speech and language for children and adults with socially maladaptive behaviors. Towards the end of the Workshop, Mr. Baker was presented with a shield for his contribution and participation. The students enthusiastically took part in various discussions throughout the length of the session and were able to gain much valued knowledge with the intent of applying it to their profession.

Dr. Nargis Khan Condolence Meeting

Dr. Nargis Khan was a founder member of the SPEECH & HEARING ASSOCIATION OF PAKISTAN, (SHAP) a nongovernmental, noncommercial, voluntary

Organization that caters little children, adults and their families suffering from speech, language, hearing and/or swallowing disorders.

She played a key role in establishing the Ziauddin College of Speech Language & Hearing Sciences, and worked exceedingly hard in supporting the students of ZCSLHS and low income patients till the very end. Her vision was clear; to serve the people in need of services and her life was dedicated to the services of humanity.

Dr. Nargis was not only there for the orphans, and destitute men, Women and children, but stood by anyone and everyone whom she could help in anyway big or small, Compassion, honesty, commitment, patience and peace personified her.

It is very hard to believe that Dr. Nargis Khan Is no more with us, she passed away at night on 3rd May 2018. (May her soul rest in peace and may Allah SWT grant her highest rank in jannah amen).

Ziauddin College of speech language and hearing sciences organized the condolence meeting to celebrate her life and offered Fatiha for Dr. Nargis Khan, at the college campus, of ZCSLHS on Thursday 10th May 2018.

The President of SHAP proposed a memorium for Dr. Nargis Khan, to which Dean Faculty Health Sciences agreed to name the library at CSLHS as the “Dr. Nargis Khan Library.”

Her brother Dr. Rehman Khan shared her life’s works whilst the faculty and students of CSLHS, members of the BOS all listened tearfully with deep gratitude.
